Dr. Speers was first associated with the Department of Food Science and Technology as an Adjunct Professor in 1991. In 1994 he joined the Department as a tenure-track Assistant Professor. He became a full Professor in July of 2000. Prior to joining Dalhousie Dr. Speers was a faculty member at Acadia University from 1990 to 1994. Before completing his PhD he was employed in industry as a laboratory coordinator and QA chemist. Alex has had extensive experience with quality assurance and has worked in the quality assurance department of two major Canadian breweries and taught the subject in an academic setting. In 1994 he organized and instructed a two-day HACCP workshop for industrial and government personnel. In 1997 he traveled to Changzhou and assisted a Chinese brewery with the development of a quality assurance program. He also regularly assists companies in solving quality and process related problems.
Research projects:
Dr. Speers' research interests developed from his early industrial experiences in both the brewing and the oil-drilling fluid sectors. Currently, his interests are food science, brewing science and colloidal rheology. Active research areas include:
